Cavalry tank museum



Visit on 8t Aug 2012 located at the armoured corps regimental centre and school (ACC&S) Ahmednagar (Maharastra) located on the Sholapur road.

Timimgs 9 to 5 throughout the year with an entry fee of Rs. 10 for civilians

The place is worth a shot as you might never have seen such a beautiful and large collection of tanks as this is Asia's 1st tank museum .Away from the hustle and bustle of the daily life it situated amidst the green surroundings. for a moment you might not realize what you will see inside. 
The place has its charm and spirit of its own it has a wide selection of tanks from WWI till date nicely kept place makes you feel welcome to the place.The ply cards resting in front of each and every tank gives you a glimpse in its past and acquisition though bloody battles
The museum has an air of history hung in the air like what the vehicle has gone through it still is clinched in them.
It's classic and timeless take your kids along as they are the future generation who will be the torch bearer.




The standstill history can be seen at a leisurely pace and at the same time one can click a few picks in various sizes, though the  museum had a few good pieces with history still I am providing a brief synopsis of a few with which we spent a bit of time trying to smell and touch history lessons through their blown up turrets, even if a person is not museum buff still they will like the place



These are a few pieces we came across


Has only one canon – an artillery piece captured from the German African corpsin the north African desert by the 4 Indian infantry Division under the British flag this 88 mm anti tank weapon was the best anti tank gun the German had in WWII in terms of accuracy and rate of fire.

The M48 patton tank of American origin was captured in the battle of Phillora in the Indo –pak war of sep 1965 this tank had 3 anti tank hits one of which bounced off the front armour and the 2nd penetrated the hull partially and the 3rd AP round penetrated the armour nd destroyed the tank. named after the famous general Patton of WWII this was a formidable tank of its time

The Chaffe tank was of American origin was captured in the battle of garibpur in Bangladesh in Dec 1972 it was that in this battle that Major narang of 45 cavalary was awarded the posthumous MVC for gallantry.
By tradition all captured tanks of the enemy have their main guns pointed downwards as shown in the pics
The PT 76 was an amphibitous tank of Russian origin which was extensively utilized in the riverine terrain of Bangladesh (thn east Pakistan) in the 1971 indo – Pak war it was this tank of 45 CAV wich fought the Pak Chaffes in the battle of Garibpur


The AMX 13 was the only light tank of the Indian army of French origin it had a weight of 13 tons it was a first tank to be bloodied in battle in chhamb jurian in Sep 1965. C Squadron of 20 lancers fought a Pakistani armourmed attack. Outnumbered 6 is to 1 these light tanks held on and saved the town of Akhnoor more than a dozen tankmen of 20 lancers laid down their lives  in the defence of Akhnoor  town.
